Human trials support this nutrient moving this system for a typical person, not just a lab or animal mechanism.
A plausible mechanism with mixed, preliminary, or limited-population evidence — often shown mainly in people who were already deficient.
Nutrients involved in plant-based diet
Iodine Established
Needed to make thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism, growth, and development.
Caution: Iodine has a narrow comfortable range — both too little and too much can disrupt the thyroid. If you have a thyroid condition, check with your clinician before using iodine or kelp supplements.
Iron Established
Carries oxygen in the blood and supports energy production. Iron from animal foods (heme) absorbs more easily than plant iron.
Caution: More iron isn't always better. Men and post-menopausal women rarely need extra, and people with hemochromatosis (iron overload) should avoid iron supplements. Take an iron supplement only for a known need, ideally guided by bloodwork.
Omega-3 DHA Established
A marine omega-3 that is a major structural fat in the brain and retina, supporting brain and eye health across life.
Vitamin B12 Established
Keeps nerve cells and red blood cells healthy and works with folate to make DNA. Mainly found in animal foods.
Zinc Established
Supports the immune system, wound healing, normal sense of taste and smell, and the growth of new cells.
